Commercial Booster Coil Basics
by Dan Jacobs, January 9, 2018
If you are in the HVAC business, you have probably needed to purchase or replace hot water booster coils at some point. And, there’s a good possibility that you have almost always needed them quickly. Generally speaking, booster coils are primarily installed someplace in the duct-work, while the smaller-sized coils are mostly non-headered. Knowing that, there are really one – two secrets to correctly size a booster coil.
- Booster coils run in approximately 30 sizes anywhere from 6” x 12” to 30” X 60”. Booster coils are 1 or 2 row coils that are available in 60 sizes (30 in 1 row; 30 in 2 rows).
- Typically, allowable air duct velocities can be higher than allowable coil velocities. To get an accurate picture, a really good hot water coil face velocity can range anywhere from 800 Ft/Minute – 1,000 Ft/Minute. With that in mind, choose a booster coil that comes very close to matching the size of your duct-work, while recognizing that it will probably be bigger in size, with transitions required.
- You will need a 1 or 2 row booster coil based on your BTU requirements. Capital Coil can provide you with a price quote and performance information in as little as 10 minutes.
All in all, booster coils are pretty easy to select. The trick is making sure the coils get to the job-site on time and in-tact. Capital Coil builds these booster coils in 5 work-days or less as a standard. We’d love for you to test us out at your next opportunity. Give us a call!
